Wolfgang Amadé Mozart:
Concert for piano and orchestra in D minor, KV 466 (1785)
Anton Bruckner:
Symphony no. 2 in C minor, WAB 102 (1872)
It is not only its key – D minor – that makes this piano concerto one of Mozart's best-known, and at the same time most moving, works. Author Wolfgang Hildesheimer saw it as a textbook example of absolute music. In 1872 Bruckner's Second was rejected by the Vienna Philharmonic as "unplayable rubbish". Today it is undisputed that in this very work the composer set out on the road that would lead him to his later symphonies. Just one year later, under the baton of the composer, the Vienna Philharmonic gave the work its first performance at the closing ceremony of the World Exhibition. It became a triumph for the composer.
