The Museum for Domestic Culture was built in 1775-1780 for Johann Rudolf Burckhardt. Burckhardt was a silk manufacturer from Basel. Since the opening of the house in 1951, it was used as a museum: Half of the exhibition rooms are dedicated to the Basels Domestic Culture of the 18th and 19th century. One of these rooms is the Blue Saloon, where members of the Sinfonieorchester Basel will play the Sunday matinees. In their concerts programmes, they explore the history of the house and play music from the respective epochs.
