Sinfonieorchester Basel
Sol Gabetta, cello
Ivor Bolton, conductor
Ferruccio Busoni: Comedy-Overture, op. 38
Camille Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, op. 33
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A, op. 92
A fine Swiss orchestra is joined by a Blackburn-born conductor and a young Argentinian cellist who is already among the top rank of solo performers. Busoni’s Comedy Overture is a rarity which fizzes with excitement, while Saint-Saëns’ lyrical First Cello Concerto is one of his most admired works. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony was once described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’, and its inexhaustible vitality never fails to impress.
