Clara Schumann (born Wieck) would celebrate her 200th birthday this year. In honour of the German pianist and composer, the Basel Symphony Orchestra opens its Cocktail Concert series with an extraordinary concert at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois.
The programme includes works by Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Clara's husband Robert Schumann. Benjamin Gregor-Smith (violoncello) and Aglaia Graf (piano) will play alongside Marta Kowalczyk (violin), the first coordinated leader of the Basel Symphony Orchestra. The soprano Sheva Tehoval will perform 4 songs - including the song Am Strande, pulsated with passionate energy, based on a text by the Scottish national poet Robert Burns (1759-1796), whom Schumann especially appreciates. Hans-Georg Hofmann will moderate the evening. At the end of the concert, the audience will also be treated to a little (birthday) surprise.
Happy Birthday Clara Schumann
