It is one hundred years since the musical tornado, the big-hearted jack of all trades, the compositional Renaissance man who was Leonard Bernstein first saw the light of day. At just 27 he was appointed principal conductor of the New York City Symphony Orchestra. His interpretations of Mahler were a major factor underlying his recognition as a conductor, and he was the first American maestro to wield the baton at La Scala in Milan. As a composer he influenced American musical theatre like nobody else, and he created new, hybrid forms that even today have yet to realize their full potential. And yet neither on television nor in the concert hall did he ever tire of bringing classical music to younger, less experienced audiences. His greatest admirers include conductor and pianist Wayne Marshall, American Broadway star Kim Criswell, and Daniel Schnyder, the Swiss saxophonist and composer who lives in New York – all three of whom will pay "Homage to Lenny" with the SOB.
