Belcea Quartet
Leoš Janácek: String quartet no. 1, inspired by Tolstoy’s The Kreutzer sonata
Benjamin Britten: String quartet no. 3, op. 94
Leo Tolstoy wrote about the failure and misfortune of marriage in 1889 in his novella Kreutzersonate. Leoš Janáček translates this into music in his 1st string quartet. It is inevitable that the sorrow about Kamila Stösslová's unrequited love and the broken relationship with his wife Zdenka Janáčková will resonate. The Belcea Quartet around SOB members Axel Schacher and Antoine Lederlin add Janáčeks Alterswerk Benjamin Britten's late String Quartet No. 3, the last movement of which was written in and about Venice.
