The USA – since its beginning a nation of immigrants where people of all countries have found a new home. Over the years an original American musical tradition has developed in this melting pot of the most diverse cultures. To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the American composer Leonard Bernstein, who not least with the musical West Side Story created an ardent plea for cultural diversity in the USA, Theater Basel will ring in the New Year with music from America in a celebration of the diversity of American music and its composers. A musical cross-section of the land of boundless opportunity including works by Samuel Barber, John Adams, Scott Joplin, John Philip Sousa and Aaron Copland – and focusing on Leonard Bernstein!
