Ludwig van Beethoven:
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 5 in E-flat major, op. 73 (1809)
Excerpts from the ballet music The Creatures of Prometheus, op. 43 with texts by Alain Claude Sulzer (2019)
There is no doubt about it: the myth around Prometheus, which not only brings man the divine fire but also reason and a sense of beauty, was a matter entirely to Beethoven's taste. Actor Peter Simonischek, long-time Jedermann and celebrated title hero of the Oscar-nominated film Toni Erdmann, leads the audience through the concert and brings the story to life with texts by the Swiss writer Alain Claude Sulzer.
The Symphony Orchestra of Basel under the baton of its principal conductor Ivor Bolton is already providing the appropriate prelude with Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto. Alexander Melnikow takes on the role of the soloist who fights for his own freedom.
The tour of the Basel Symphony Orchestra through Germany and Liechtenstein is supported by the Swiss Arts Fundation Pro Helvetia. We are extremely grateful to the Swiss Arts Fundation for its support.
