Engelbert Humperdinck created the most successful fairytale opera of all time when he wrote Hänsel und Gretel . While the popular Grimm fairytale tells the rather gruesome story of both children who are abandoned and then fall into the clutches of a witch, Humperdinck transforms the story into a milder but no less exciting version with a happy end.
