Richard Wagner:
Siegfried, WWV 86C, 3rd act
After the concertante 3rd act from Wagner's Parsifal in the Münster and Goetheanum, Sir Mark Elder will devote himself this time to the 3rd act from Siegfried in his Basel comeback. It consists of a series of three musical duels not only of great voices but also of great ideas. «Do you know what Wotan wants,» the God, disguised as a wanderer, asks the omniscient primeval mother Erda, who actually doesn't want to know anything more about it. But Wotan's will also has limits: carelessly, wild Siegfried smashes the highly symbolic spear in order to fight his way to Brünnhilde. In view of the fact that she is «not a man», Siegfried no longer knows what he wants either. This state of affairs does not last long: Joyfully and in highest tones, the two finally devote themselves to «shining love», which is not far from «laughing death.»
In plain language:
The god Wotan guards sleeping Brünnhilde. Here comes Wotan's grandson Siegfried. Siegfried doesn't recognize Wotan. They fight. Siegfried smashes Wotan's spear.
Then Siegfried wakes sleeping Brünnhilde with a kiss. They fall in love. They are afraid of their feelings, but in the end they are happy about their love.
