The symphony concert 'Orgelsinfonie' with the world premiere by Dieter Ammann will be broadcast on Thursday, 6 February 2025 at 20h00 on Radio SRF2 Kultur.

Enthusiastic reviews of the 'Organ Symphony' and Ammann's world premiere

The 'Organ Symphony' concert on 22 January 2025 was enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike. In particular, the world premiere of Dieter Ammann's viola concerto 'No templates' with soloist Nils Mönkemeyer was called 'deeply moving' and 'sonically overwhelming' by the press. Under the baton of Fabien Gabel, the orchestra also impressed with its interpretation of French masterpieces such as Debussy's 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' and Saint-Saëns' 'Organ Symphony'.

Concert review: A thrilling evening with ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (in German)

The symphony concert on 23 October received rave reviews: 'Orchestra and soloist played with palpable passion,' wrote Marco Stücklin in Opernmagazin. Under the baton of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, concertmaster Friederike Starkloff shone as the soloist in Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet crowned the sold-out evening in the Stadtcasino Basel.

Critics' Roundtable 'Very British'

The second round of critics for the 2023/24 season took place after the symphony concert on 22 November 2023. In attendance: Benjamin Herzog (SRF Kultur), Anna Kardos (music editor NZZ am Sonntag), Mattos Berger (musicologist) and Franz König (President of the Friends of the Basel Symphony Orchestra).

Line-up change 'Adventskonzert'

For health reasons, Mané Galoyan has had to cancel her appearance at the 'Adventskonzert' on Sunday, 3 December 2023 at 11 am in the Stadtcasino Basel. In her place, the Sinfonieorchester Basel has been able to engage the young Swedish soprano Christina Nilsson, who will be making her debut with the orchestra.

Nomination ICMA 2024

The CD 'Camille Saint-Saëns: Poèmes Symphoniques', recorded under the baton of Ivor Bolton, has been nominated for the 2024 International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) in the 'Symphonic Music' category. The winners will be announced on 18 January 2024.

Nil Venditti takes over the conducting of the Sinfonieorchester Basel at short notice for the ill Leonardo Sini at the jazz off beat concert with Stefano Bollani on Monday, 15 May, at the Stadtcasino Basel. The Italian-Turkish conductor thus returns to the Sinfonieorchester Basel after a short time, having only made her successful debut with the orchestra at the Advent concert last December.

Travel information for the 'Wunschkonzert'

A demonstration is planned at 7 pm on 8.3.2023 on Barfüsserplatz. For this reason, we ask you to take this into account when travelling to the 'Wunschkonzert' at 7.30 pm and to arrange enough time if necessary.

Markus Poschner will be the new principal conductor from season 2025/26

Ivor Bolton's successor has been chosen: the new principal conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel from the 2025/26 season will be the German conductor Markus Poschner. Click here for the media release.

Recording 'Weissagung und Erfüllung'

In August 2022, Hans Huber's Christmas oratorio 'Weissagung und Erfüllung' was performed again for the first time in over 100 years. On 22 December at 8 pm, SRF2 Kultur will broadcast the recording in the programme 'Im Konzertsaal'.

Double Nomination at International Classical Music Awards

The Sinfonieorchester Basel has been nominated twice for the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA)!

The CDs 'Koechlin: Seven Stars' Symphony + Vers La Voûte Etoilée', recorded under the direction of Ariane Matiakh, are nominated in the category 'Symphonic Music' as well as 'Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3 + Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini' with pianist Irina Georgieva under the direction of Sascha Goetzel and Pablo González in the category 'Concertos'.

Full closure of Barfüsserplatz on Wednesday, 21th September 2022

Information on the concert arrival at the Stadtcasino Basel on Wednesday, 21 September 2022:
On 20th-25th September 2022, there will be a full closure of Barfüsserplatz due to a construction site. Unfortunately, this will also affect the tram connections to the Stadtcasino Basel. Please note the usual diversions of the tram traffic according to the information provided by BVB. We therefore ask you to allow sufficient time for your journey to the Stadtcasino and apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Flashmob 'Dies Irae'

On Thursday, 25 August 2022, 160 students from the school choirs of Muttenz and Liestal performed the 'Dies Irae' from Giuseppe Verdi's 'Requiem' on Barfüsserplatz. See the whole video here.

Documentary about 'Artist in Residence' Gabriela Montero

Gabriela Montero was 'Artist in Residence' of the Sinfonieorchester Basel for the season 21/22. She is a pianist, improviser and composer. Gabriela Montero comes from Venezuela, is politically active and supports young artists from her home country.

Documentary film 'Vo Bärg und Tal'

The documentary film of the sing-along concert 'Vo Bärg und Tal' is online! As part of the season theme 'Herkunft' of the 21/22 season, the Sinfonieorchester Basel also visited twelve retirement homes in Basel-Stadt and Baselland with its 'Singalong Mobil'.

Critic Andrew Clements wrote in 'The Guardian' about the CD 'Charles Koechlin: The Seven Stars' Symphony' recorded by the Basel Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ariane Matiakh:

The CD 'Charles Koechlin: The Seven Stars' Symphony' will be released on Friday, 3.6.2022, by Capriccio and is available in the CD-shop of the Sinfonieorchester Basel and at the Kulturhaus Bider & Tanner.

Broadcast of the symphony concert 'Eötvös' in the SRF Kultur programme 'Im Konzertsaal'

As a composer, conductor and teacher, the Hungarian Péter Eötvös is one of the most influential personalities of New Music. With two Swiss premieres, the Sinfonieorchester Basel presented him in concert on 16 February 2022 as conductor and 'Composer in Residence' of the current season.

Radio SRF Kultur recorded the concert and will broadcast it on Wednesday, 12 May 2022, at 8:00 pm in the programme 'Im Konzertsaal'.

The concert will be available for listening until 60 days after the broadcast date.

Peeks into the final rehearsal of the first 'Basel Film Music Festival'

On Friday evening, 6 May 2022, Basel's first film music festival kicked off with Oscar-winning film music composer Alexandre Desplat. Telebasel was at the dress rehearsal.

Cross-generational sing-along project

In the cross-generational sing-along project 'Vo Bärg und Tal', the Sinfonieorchester Basel, together with the Mädchenkantorei Basel, the Knabenkantorei Basel, the Notabene Chamber Choir and many schoolchildren, brought many people together to sing Swiss folk songs. Telebasel reports on the special mediation project and interviews Elena D'Orta, responsible for the conception and planning of the project, about it.

Re-opening concert on SWR television

One and a half years ago, in September 2020, the Stadtcasino Basel, rebuilt by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, was reopened. To mark the occasion, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, together with violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Helena Winkelman, performed works by Johannes Brahms, Helena Winkelman and Rolf Liebermann under the baton of principal conductor Ivor Bolton.

Charity concert 'Für den Frieden' with pianist Iryna Krasnovska

Iryna Krasnovska, a pianist from Basel with roots in Ukraine, will be on stage with two Ukrainian singers and the Basel Symphony Orchestra for the benefit concert 'Für den Frieden' on Sun, 20 March 2022. In an interview with Telebasel, she talks about the situation in Ukraine and the power of music:

The Sinfonieorchester Basel comments on the current situation in the Ukraine: "We are alarmed by Russia's brutal attacks on the Ukraine. This war on European soil is also an attack on peace and democracy in our world. Our sympathy goes out to all the people in Ukraine and to the victims this brutal war has already claimed. It is all the more important to strengthen and unite our international community through the power of art. The Sinfonieorchester Basel stands in solidarity with the people in the Ukraine, with those who are suffering and have to experience this inconceivably cruel time. Our thoughts are with them."

On February 3, 2022 at 8 PM, Radio SRF2 Culture will broadcast the past guest performance of the Sinfonieorchester Basel at the "Settimane Musicali" in Ascona. The focus is on Péter Eötvös' orchestral piece "Dialogue with Mozart", Mozart's Piano Concerto in E flat major KV 271 and Brahms' Third Symphony. The concert took place in Locarno on September 17, 2021, conducted by Ivor Bolton and featuring pianist Plamena Mangova.

Please note that according to the Federal Council's decision, the 2G rule (access only for vaccinated and recovered persons) and a general mask requirement apply. We therefore ask you to show your certificate as well as your identity card/ID at the entrance. The certificate requirement applies to persons aged 16 and over. The mask obligation applies to persons aged 12 and over.

Introduction to the Symphony Concert 'Organ Symphony' on 22 January 2025

In the latest episode of the podcast 'Concert Corner', Benjamin Herzog presents a programme full of contrasts. From Debussy's impressionistic 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' to the world premiere of Dieter Ammann's Viola Concerto and Saint-Saëns' monumental 'Organ Symphony' on 22 January 2025, the programme will be conducted by Fabien Gabel, who will be making his debut with the Basel Symphony Orchestra. Solidarity with the Northern Ballet Sinfonia

Northern Ballet has announced that due to budget cuts it has been forced to scrap its live orchestra for some touring productions and replace the musicians with recorded music. Unlike other Northern Ballet staff, the musicians have freelance contracts and are only paid for the work they do.

The Sinfonieorchester Basel is appealing:
"Replacing an orchestra with recordings is as cynical as it is nonsensical. Cynical because it destroys the livelihood of many musicians. And nonsensical, because no audience wants it! We, the Sinfonieorchester Basel, stand in solidarity with our colleagues at the Northern Ballet Sinfonia and call on the authorities to reverse their decision. The orchestra, the ballet and its audience do not deserve this!

'Airë', a composition by Domenico Melchiorre, principal timpanist of the Sinfonieorchester Basel, draws inspiration from Liszt's Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale 'Ad nos, ad salutarem undam'. Markus Poschner becomes new Principal Conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel

Ivor Bolton's successor has been chosen: from the 2025/26 season, Markus Poschner will become principal conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel

On 30 January 2023, the Foundation Board of the Sinfonieorchester Basel elected Markus Poschner as the new Principal Conductor and successor to Ivor Bolton. Poschner will take up the position of Chief Conductor of the Sinfonieorchester Basel from the 2025/26 season. Poschner comes from a Munich musical family and is not only considered an accomplished opera conductor, but also makes international guest appearances with renowned orchestras.
