When we think of Georges Bizet, our thoughts inevitably turn to his greatest success: the opera Carmen. Connoisseurs may also mention his second most famous opera, Les pêcheurs de perles, or the orchestral suite Arlésienne, but beyond that his work is largely unknown. There is, however, a large body of work from which the Sinfonieorchester Basel is now presenting a gem: the small orchestral suite Jeux d'enfants. Sergei Prokofiev's Symphonie classique can also be described as a jewel. It is one of the composer's best-known works, not least because of its light and lovingly parodic musical language, which sets it apart from all subsequent compositions. Among other things, it parodies the musical language of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, whose Fifth Violin Concerto will also be performed on this evening's concert. The solo part will be played by the young Swiss virtuoso Raphael Nussbaumer.
