The Ivor Bolton era draws to a close with one of the great works of choral symphonic music. Mendelssohn's grandiose Lobgesang is festive music that was performed in Leipzig's Thomaskirche in 1840 as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations of the invention of printing. It is preceded by two works from the archive of the Paul Sacher Foundation, which led to a dialogue between past and present. Oliver Knussen's Music for a Puppet Court uses English music from the 16th century. In his ballet music for Pulcinella, Stravinsky refers to Neapolitan music of the 18th century, the musical substance of which he takes apart and completely reassembles in his own original way.
