6.30 pm concert introduction in the Musiksaal

It shimmers and flickers when Debussy has his faun play the flute, lost in a dream. The French composer's atmospheric tone poem is a milestone in music history and is still considered the epitome of musical impressionism today. While the viola is in the spotlight in Dieter Ammann's commissioned composition, the eponymous instrument plays a surprisingly subordinate role in Saint-Saëns' organ symphony. The 'queen of instruments' nevertheless provides phenomenal tonal colours in the work, which Saint-Saëns described as his best.
