Many composers had a special relationship with the railway: Antonín Dvořák spent hours at Prague station chatting to train drivers, Sergei Rachmaninoff used it to escape, and Richard Strauss was even involved in a train accident. The train journey was best captured musically by Arthur Honegger, whose symphonic work Pacific 231 was an international success. The huffing and puffing of the steam engine is so realistic that the onomatopoeia almost becomes a visual image.
