Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98 (1885)
During the period of Stalinist terror, the Russian Reinhold Glière composes a concerto for solo harp and orchestra. He was lucky: the thoroughbred romantic wrote a work in the style of Tchaikovsky and did not cause any political offence. Brahms was also often criticised as a conservative - but his last symphony, the Fourth, opens the door to the future in terms of harmony and rhythm. Rhythm, on the other hand, is at the centre of the orchestral work Salve by Basel composer Andrea Scartazzini - the Sinfonieorchester Basel premiered it a few years ago for the opening of the remodelled Stadtcasino Basel.
