Orchesterbiografie
The Sinfonieorchester Basel is one of Switzerland’s most significant and long-established orchestras. Founded in 1876, it celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2026. As the resident orchestra of both the historic and acoustically outstanding Musiksaal at the Stadtcasino Basel and the Theater Basel, it plays a pivotal role in the city’s musical life. The orchestra comprises over 100 musicians from 25 nations. Under the baton of principal conductor Markus Poschner, the Basel Mahler Cycle, scheduled to run until 2030, started in the 2025/26 season, building on Gustav Mahler’s historic connection to the orchestra: in 1903, Mahler personally conducted his Symphony No. 2 in the Basler Minster Cathedral. The repertoire of the orchestra ranges from the Viennese Classical period through Romanticism to the latest modern works. Numerous world premieres and the close connection to the Paul Sacher Foundation underline the orchestra’s commitment to combining tradition and the present day at the highest artistic level. Tours, radio and television recordings, as well as multi-award-winning CD recordings, attest to its international reputation.
