Orchesterbiografie

The Sinfonieorchester Basel is one of Switzerland’s most significant and long-standing orchestras. Founded in 1876, the orchestra will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2026. As the resident orchestra of the historic Stadtcasino Basel concert hall, which is renowned for its outstanding acoustics, and the Theater Basel, it plays a pivotal role in the city’s musical life. The orchestra comprises over 100 musicians from 25 countries. Under the baton of Principal Conductor Markus Poschner, the Basel Mahler Cycle began in the 2025/26 season and is scheduled to run until 2030. This cycle builds on Gustav Mahler’s historic connection to the orchestra: in 1903, Mahler personally conducted his Symphony No. 2 here. The orchestra's repertoire ranges from the Viennese classical period and Romanticism to the latest modern works. The orchestra's commitment to combining tradition and the present day at the highest artistic level is underlined by numerous world premieres and its close connection to the Paul Sacher Foundation. Its international reputation is attested to by tours, radio and television recordings, as well as multi-award-winning CD recordings.
