Liberation through forced marriage? In Humperdinck’s comic opera Die Heirat wider Willen (‹The Forced Marriage›), protagonist Louise entangles her entourage in all kinds of intrigues that ultimately lead to two happy marriages. Humperdinck’s wife Hedwig wrote the seemingly feminist libretto based on Alexandre Dumas’ Les demoiselles de Saint Cyr.

Based on the folk song collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (‹The Boy’s Magic Horn›) by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, Mahler created a musical cosmos over many years that contains all facets of human life. The ballad-like humorous orchestral songs are intended to be gender-neutral, regardless of vocal register, and can be freely combined.

Franz Schubert literally buried Ludwig van Beethoven when accompanying the composer’s funeral as a torchbearer in 1827. Even though Beethoven had set the bar very high for the symphonic genre, Schubert managed to free himself from being under the shadow of the ‹Titan› with one last stroke of genius. With his symphony in C major, The Great, he embarked on a new symphonic path while at the same time remembering musical traditions with folk song-like episodes.
