Millions of people recognise Wojciech Kilar’s music – be it from films such as Roman Polanski’s The Pianist and Death and the Maiden, or from Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. His pastoral Orawa represents a region of the Carpathians on the Polish-Slovakian border. The longing for the forces of nature sounds powerful in this music for string orchestra.
In the cello concerto by the Polish composer Witold Lutosławski, the soloist moves at a dangerous altitude. Composed during the Cold War in 1970, the work was understood as a depiction of the battle between the individual and society. We look forward to the debut of the Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández.
The only eccentricity which can be ascribed to Antonín Dvořák was perhaps his weakness for ‹trainspotting›, that is, the recording of train numbers. Until shortly before his death, the composer visited Prague’s train stations almost daily. The Seventh Symphony demonstrates Dvořák’s greatest strength: a humble compactness modelled on Beethoven, which never loses its soulful melancholy.
