Anniversary celebrations

During his stay in Basel in 1903, Gustav Mahler stayed at the elegant Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, as did Pablo Picasso and Thomas Mann. Celebrities, in other words. And Poschner’s Passion is all about fame in music, through and thanks to music, whilst also revealing the odd secret or two about music stars.

In his Third Symphony, Gustav Mahler tells the story of a ‘world’ – indeed, an entire cosmogony – from the world’s beginnings to heavenly love. It is by no means a straightforward journey; one must be prepared for quite a few ups and downs. Yet when, at the end, everything comes together in a great embrace, in a grand reconciliation, the long journey has been well worth it.

Franz Schubert’s Fifth Symphony flutters in like a butterfly. It is the work of a 19-year-old who wrote enthusiastically in his diary about his great role model: ‘O immortal Mozart, how many countless, uplifting impressions of a brighter, better life have you imprinted upon our souls.’ Schubert, following in the footsteps of the Viennese Classical period. Later, he would go his own way, though the seeds of this are already sown here: in harmonic innovations, in a unique sense of timing that makes one lose track of time.

The ‘Thierstein Fiddlers’ string class has been running since August 2020 as a successful partnership between Thierstein Primary School and the Sinfonieorchester Basel. This collaboration enables pupils to learn a string instrument free of charge. Musicians from the Sinfonieorchester Basel teach the children on a weekly basis and work with them to prepare programmes for concert performances.
