Interview with ‹Artist in Residence›
The French-Albanian pianist Marie-Ange Nguci is this season's 'Artist in Residence' with the Sinfonieorchester Basel. At the age of 13, she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Lagny-sur-Marne (France) and was accepted into the class of Nicholas Angelich and Denis Pascal in Paris the same year. She has since performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre de Paris.
Marie-Ange Nguci will perform Beethoven's 4th piano concerto with the Sinfonieorchester Basel conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla at the concert 'Lemminkäinen' on 27 and 28 September 2023.

Interview with Onutė Gražinytė
Pianist Onutė Gražinytė will meet her elder sister, conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, at the concert 'Daphnis & Chloé' on 21 September 2023 at the Stadtcasino Basel. Gražinytė will play the rarely performed Piano Concerto by Alexander Scriabin with the Sinfonieorchester Basel. One thing is for sure: in this family from Vilnius there are close family ties through music.

Interview with Lucas and Arthur Jussen
Under the motto 'Familienbande' (family ties), the Sinfonieorchester Basel will launch the 2023/24 season with the concert 'Beflügelt' on 30 and 31 August 2023. The brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen will open the season with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in E major, which the fourteen-year-old composer wrote for his older sister Fanny on her birthday. The siblings performed for the Dutch royal family as children and have been making waves ever since. In this interview, the duo talk about rehearsing and performing together, their different educational backgrounds and the importance of family.

Unsuk Chin, 'Composer in Residence' of the season 2023/24
Unsuk Chin is regarded as one of the most important composers of our time. The South Korean composer, who lives in Berlin, studied with Kang Suk-hi at Seoul National University and with György Ligeti in Hamburg from 1985 to 1988. In the 2023/24 season, the multi-award winning composer will be 'Composer in Residence' with the Sinfonieorchester Basel. In the interview, Chin talks about her compositional style and why she became a composer.
The Sinfonieorchester Basel will premiere Unsuk Chin's latest orchestral work at its season-opening concert 'Beflügelt' on 30 and 31 August in the Stadtcasino Basel. Before the concert on 30 August, the Discovery Programme offers a unique opportunity to get to know the composer and her music better through panel discussions.

Pianist Alexander Melnikov on Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1
Two years after their joint CD recording, Alexander Melnikov returns to the Sinfonieorchester Basel. As a guest at the last concert of the season 2022/23, Melnikov plays Johannes Brahms' (1833-1897) Piano Concerto No. 1. In the interview, the pianist shares his thoughts on historical pianos and the tradition of the Russian piano school as well as the value of historical recordings for his artistic work and Brahms' musical journey.
The symphony concert 'César' with Alexander Melnikov will take place on 28 and 29 June, at 7.30 pm each night at the Stadtcasino Basel.

Conductor Pierre Bleuse on the 'Boléro' by Ravel
French conductor Pierre Bleuse talks about the famous 'Boléro' by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). The work will be performed at the symphony concert 'Boléro' on 24 May 2023 at 7.30 pm at the Stadtcasino Basel.
Ravel remarked about his most successful work to his colleague Arthur Honegger: "I have made only one masterpiece, that is the Boléro; unfortunately it contains no music." He is not entirely wrong: a single rhythmic model in 15 minutes - repeated 169 times. The ecstatic force that emerges from this is unique.

New Release 'Camille Saint-Saëns: Symphonic Poems'
After a multi-part cycle with works by Gabriel Fauré and most recently rarities by Benjamin Britten, the Sinfonieorchester Basel and Principal Conductor Ivor Bolton are dedicating themselves to a forgotten genre of works - the symphonic poem. On 5 May, the new CD 'Camille Saint-Saëns: Symphonic Poems' will be released under the direction of Principal Conductor Ivor Bolton with 5 works by the French late Romantic composer –available in our CD shop.
Stephan Schmidt talks about Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez'
Stephan Schmidt, guitarist and director of the Hochschule für Musik FHNW, talks about Joaquín Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez', a concerto for guitar and orchestra from 1939. The poetic concerto is considered one of the best-known works of 20th century classical guitar music and is part of the concert programme of the first 'Wunschkonzert' of the Sinfonieorchester Basel. The 'Wunschkonzert' under the conducting of Principal Conductor Ivor Bolton will take place on 8 March 2023 at 7.30 pm at the Stadtcasino Basel.
Documentary about Gabriela Montero, 'Artist in Residence' of the season 2021/22
Gabriela Montero was 'Artist in Residence' of the Sinfonieorchester Basel for the 21/22 season. She is a pianist, improviser and composer. Gabriela Montero comes from Venezuela, is politically active and supports young artists from her home country.
