Spotlight on our wind soloists! As well as pieces by renowned composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy, they will perform Cecile Chaminade's proud Concertino, which culminates in a virtuoso cadenza. Alexandre Guilmant, one of the greatest representatives of the French Romantic organ school, composed almost exclusively for his instrument. A rare exception is his beautiful Morceau symphonique for trombone and orchestra. Like Debussy and Fauré, Guilmant wrote his piece for a competition at the Paris Conservatoire. The programme, conducted by our principal horn player, Jean-François Taillard, then takes a detour to the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen, who also worked in Paris, with the Concertino for trumpet, before finally ending with the conciliatory sounds of Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll.
