Zarathustra – Poetry meets philosophy
Podcast episode on the concert programme
The iconic sunrise from Richard Strauss's “Also sprach Zarathustra” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is one of the most famous moments in music history. Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical work of the same name, Strauss unfolds a monumental tone poem, which principal conductor Markus Poschner combines with Gustav Mahler's songs from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”. Baritone Christian Gerhaher, one of the most influential song interpreters of our time, lends Mahler's miniatures a special depth.
