The Sinfonieorchester Basel and Markus Poschner are continuing their Mahler cycle in Basel. Following Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 last season, it is now the turn of the stormy and turbulent Fifth.
Mahler called it a ‘cursed work’ that nobody understood. May it have been because he composed it entirely without a singing voice – and thus without lyrics? Critics, on the other hand, heard in it ‘an overwhelming abundance of beauty’. This naturally includes the famous Adagietto, Mahler’s declaration of love to his future wife, immortalised in Luchino Visconti’s film Death in Venice. Alongside this, Mahler unfolds a vast panorama. From the Funeral March, in which an entire world seems to be coming to an end, through an extended Scherzo that blends the earthly with sounds of longing, to the jubilant Finale.
