A musical summit meeting at the start of the year on Dornach Hill. Jonas Kaufmann sings both voice parts in Gustav Mahler’s Song of the Earth. Mahler himself never heard the work, which he told conductor Bruno Walter was the most personal of his works. In 1955 Walter – a follower of Rudolf Steiner’s teachings, incidentally – conducted a concert in the Goetheanum that included Schubert’s Unfinished. Our extra concert includes Schubert’s 10th symphony, of which only a few sketches survive. Luciano Berio, who ‘restored’ it, wrote: "Schubert’s drafts are fairly complex and of perfect beauty. With its two authors, Rendering is intended as a restoration of those sketches, not a completion or a reconstruction."
