Die Harmonie der Welt Symphony
Sergei Rachmaninov:
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in D minor, op. 30
Paul Hindemith's plans for an opera about the life and work of the astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) date back to the 1930s. However, they were not resumed until 1949, when Paul Sacher asked him to write a new work for the 25th anniversary of the Basel Chamber Orchestra. The symphony Die Harmonie der Welt, whose title refers to Kepler's 1619 work Harmonice mundi, was premiered in Basel in 1952.
Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto is something of an eight-thousand-metre peak for pianists: the death zone of virtuosity. But the work is no superficial keyboard magic! The cool elegance of the melodies, the refined harmonies and the original interweaving of the voices make the piece a rousing musical revelation. We are looking forward to the debut of the exceptional Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya and the return of Marek Janowski.
In plain language:
The scientist Johannes Kepler explored the stars. He wrote the book Harmonie der Welt (Harmony of the World) about it. The composer Paul Hindemith was interested in Johannes Kepler. Therefore he called his symphony Harmonie der Welt. The symphony was first performed in Basel in 1952.
