Today you can still visit the Salon Chopin in the Bibliothèque polonaise in the 4th arrondissement. The Polish composer is one of the celebrated virtuosos of these cultural centres of the 1830s in Paris, promoted by an amusing elite. The most important requisite of the salon was the grand piano. Driven by the salon society's appetite for the new and spectacular, art and kitsch, Chopin distinguished himself from the other salon lions by his inwardly directed playing.
