Mieczysław Weinberg: Chamber Symphony No. 4 for Clarinet, Triangle and String Orchestra, op. 153
Frédéric Chopin: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in F minor, op. 21
The complete works of Mieczysław Weinberg were only recently discovered. The more of his music that comes to light, the more we see that this composer of Polish-Jewish origin is not only one of the most productive but also one of the most creative of the 20th century.
But one question is still on everyone’s lips: How could it have taken so long for this music to come into its own? His last work is the chamber symphony for clarinet, triangle and strings. Even if Weinberg had tried to resist it, this swansong offers a musical review of a moving, eventful life.
Chopin composed his two piano concerts in Warsaw in 1830 before he had to leave his home country permanently. Even today this musical legacy of Chopin is enormously important for Polish culture. The Warsaw National Philharmonic has held the Chopin Competition for Piano every five years since 1927. It is an event that still attracts attention right throughout Poland, and ensures high viewing figures in Polish television.
We are delighted to have been able to engage Yulianna Avdeeva, the winner of the penultimate Chopin competition, as a soloist. In January 2015, the magazine Gramophone described the pianist as a performer who “makes the piano sing”.
