In 1840, a girl named Lydia was born in Livonia, Estonia. At that time, women had no access to higher education, and artistic or political activities were not on the agenda. But Lydia Koidula stubbornly went her own way: she wanted to learn, write, travel... Even as a child, her desire to become a poet was firmly established. Her poems are still read and her songs sung in Estonia today - and Lydia Koidula is still a symbol of the right to freedom and self-determination. The children's book Lydia, published by Baobab Books, tells the extraordinary story of a girl and a woman who actively and courageously stood up for her beliefs. In a cooperation project between Baobab Books and the Sinfonieorchester Basel, the eventful life of Lydia Koidula is told through music.
